Ban on corporal punishment in Korea school

Is corporal punishment “the stick of love” or "another form of child abuse"?

These days, I have often access to school corporal punishment through media. There are manydifferent ideas about punishment. I sometimes think about this issue like "Is it necessary for them to use punishment in school? Or, does the punishment have a bad influence on students?"
Do you know Korea joins recently in a global trend toward banning corporal punishment of student? Corporal punishment is now banned in all schools in Seoul under revised regulation. With many teachers facing difficulty controlling students following the ban on corporal punishment, the Seoul education office came out with a guidebook on how to deal with unruly students.
In Korea, corporal punishment has long been in practice despite many negative effects.

How do you think if you were a teacher in Korea? I hear friction between students and a teacher in Korea school two days ago. I couldn’t’ believe How students can hit the teacher on the head?! I am sometimes shocked by teenagers’ improper conduct in school. From this month, teachers in Seoul are unable to hit students, to ask them to hold both of their hands out and to run laps around the playground as disciplinary punishment. Also. A Seoul teacher reportedly encountered embarrassment when he gave a warning to a student who was smoking. A class disturber threatened to report the teacher to police for alleged bullying. A teacher received an angry reaction from a parent, while consulting about the wayward behavior of the student. Schools need to devise ways of keeping discipline among students without the use of corporal punishment.
I believe punishment is necessary to us. Because teenagers are still young. Teenagers are not able to distinguish whether it’s right or wrong yet. Therefore teachers are thinking about punishment to correct us as general way. Of course I dislike punishment. Specially, I never face to teacher who is crazy about to strike students and carried away by his emotions. However, who made him like that? It’s us!! As a result, we should not simply think about the punishment as violence but teachers shall be looked as angels if we trust them that they correct and growth more of our general ideas and mind. first of all , I think that it will take considerable time to balance the pros and cons regarding whether corporal punishment is to be fully abolished or partially retained. It is high time that we made a sensible choice for next generation.
I am expected to share your opinions about current issue
Thanks for reading ~♥

  1. In Nowadays, corporal punishment is banned in many schools. I think that meting out corporal punishment indiscriminately is inappropriate in education. But, I'm a resolute believer in the benefits of spanking student.Teachers can freely use corporal punishment whenever student deemed it necessary. It is guide students onto the right path:)

  2. Corporal punishment needs to end today
The same reasoning helps teachers cut down wasting valuable class time on less efficient disciplinary methods such as visits to the principal's office or detention.

Corporal punishment may be the 'express' method, but it is also the lazy way to discipline. Finding out why a child misbehaves, filtering out the factors involved and sousing out all the parties responsible takes time, but so does justice of any kind.

The United Nations has made it very clear that it considers such physical expressions of discipline "a form of violence." The U.N. has come down hard on the practice, saying: "To discipline or punish through physical harm is clearly a violation of the most basic of human rights. Research on corporal punishment has found it to be counterproductive and relatively ineffective, as well as dangerous and harmful to physical, psychological and social well -being."

  3. ah......... right. I also talked about the unbelievable issue that happened a couple of days ago. Like a month Before it happened, there was another similar event happened. A student and a teacher fought grabing each other's by the hair.. -__- Seriously?! What's going on?! I heard that corporal punishment is also banned in New Zealand, so teachers are having a hard time controlling their stubborn students. To make matters worse, it seems like most parents tend to believe their own children than a teacher, so what happened was in one of elementary schools in NZ, parents insisted firing one teacher and actually that teacher was kicked out of the school by reason of just not suitable for students. They are just elementary studetns,, as you mentioned above, they are not wise enough to see what they are doing now is right or wrong. I think we should allow corporal punishment for some special cases. Many students are enough spoiled because there is no stopping them..I am worried about our future filled with these adult children

  4. I think corporal punishment should be permitted as long as it is not a serious punishment. After it is banned by the government, the government gave teachers guidence books. One of that says, 'If a student is late for school, let the student sing in front of classmates'. When I heard this first, I thought it is nonsense and very funny. Nowadays, we can see articles about students who hit their teachers and defy teachers, and will these guidences work well in schools? No, I don't think so.
According to one opinion, corporal punishment makes students develp a conscience. If a teacher do corporal punishment seriously, it's violence. But in my opinion, moderate corporal punishment should be permitted to teachers to lead students to the right way.

  5. When i was in high school, our teacher can not punishment us. It was one of the our rules. If they do, every teacher and student had meeting to discuss the problem. We follow Gandhi's moto such as nonviolence. Also teacher never think the punishment is need in education. Students follow the rules which are they made by themselves such as smoking&alchol problem, cleaning and so on. Even there are not purnishment, students were good! I don't think the purnishment makes good people. - a ryeon

  6. Do you think punishment needs for students? hum.. I oppose your idea I don’t think school punishment needs for students… Well.. I am not a teacher so, I don’t know how teachers get angry to their students but, punishment really works students to change their attitude?? Hum.. I don’t agree, there must be reasons why students don’t follow teacher’ saying… so, I think the best way to solve any problem between a teacher and a student is that make a sincerely communication it makes students change a lot compared with only instant punishment!!

  7. I think corporal punishment is unnecessary for student. There is many ways to handling students.teachers will solve the problem differently. for example, teachers will give penalty points when students do somthing wrong.
I hope korea student will grow without any corporal punishment. - Jin-Woo Na.
